Rehoming a Donkey in Queensland: What to Know

Donkeys are wonderful company, but they're a long commitment. Many live into their thirties, so it's common for a donkey to outlast the circumstances they were bought into. If you need to rehome a donkey in Queensland, here's how to give them the best chance at a happy next chapter.
Things to know before you rehome a donkey
Keep bonded pairs together. Donkeys form very strong bonds and can go downhill fast if separated from their mate. If yours come as a pair, look for a home that takes both.
Share the care history. Age, hoof trims, teeth, worming, and any history of laminitis. Donkeys can founder on rich grass, so diet notes really help.
Be honest about handling. Will they lead, pick up their feet and load onto a float? Any quirks with dogs or strangers?
Check the paperwork. In Queensland, people who keep donkeys need to be registered as a biosecurity entity. Check Business Queensland for the current rules.
